Rwanda Visa Requirements

Rwanda requires a visa for most foreign nationals, but the process is straightforward. You can get a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport or any land border, or apply online through the Irembo platform up to 30 days before travel. Citizens of the African Union, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie receive free visas on arrival for 30 days, while East African Community members get a free 6-month pass. For everyone else, a single-entry tourist visa costs USD 50 and a multiple-entry visa costs USD 70.

Do You Need a Visa to Enter Rwanda?

Rwanda has one of the most open visa policies in Africa. Citizens of all countries can get a visa on arrival without prior application. However, whether you pay for it depends on your nationality:

• Visa-free for 6 months: Citizens of EAC member states (Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda)
• Visa-free for 90 days: Citizens of AU, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie member states (including most African, European, and Commonwealth countries), plus citizens of Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, DR Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Mauritius, Philippines, Qatar, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, and Saint Kitts and Nevis
• Visa required (on arrival or online): Citizens of all other countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, and most non-African, non-Commonwealth nations

Visa Types Available in Rwanda

Rwanda offers several visa categories depending on your purpose of travel:

EAC citizens receive a visitor pass free of charge with up to 6 months validity. Citizens of AU, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie countries also receive free visas for 30 days.

How to Apply for a Rwanda Visa

You have two options for obtaining a Rwanda visa: on arrival or online through the Irembo platform.

Option 1: Visa on Arrival

All travelers can obtain a visa at the following entry points:

• Kigali International Airport (main entry point for air travelers)
• All land border crossings (including borders with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and DR Congo)

To get your visa on arrival, bring:

• A passport valid for at least 6 months with at least one blank page
• A completed immigration form (available at the port of entry)
• Proof of onward travel (return ticket or itinerary)
• Sufficient funds for your stay
• Visa fee in cash (USD preferred) if applicable

Option 2: Apply Online via Irembo

The Irembo platform is Rwanda’s official e-government portal for visa applications. You can apply up to 30 days before your travel date.

Step-by-step process:

1. Visit the Irembo portal at irembo.gov.rw
2. Navigate to Immigration and Emigration, then click Visa Application
3. Choose your visa type and click Apply
4. Enter your personal details (nationality, document type, name, date of birth)
5. Enter your travel details (arrival date, port of entry, purpose of visit)
6. Upload required documents in the correct format and size
7. Pay the visa fee online (USD or Rwandan Francs accepted)
8. Wait for processing (typically 4 business days)
9. Receive your e-visa approval via email

• Scanned passport biodata page (PDF, max 500KB)
• Passport-size photo with white background (JPG, max 500KB)
• Application letter (PDF, max 500KB)

Rwanda Visa Fees and Payment

Visa fees must not exceed USD 50 for single-entry or USD 70 for multiple-entry visas. You can pay in USD or Rwandan Francs. Online applicants can pay through the Irembo platform; those applying on arrival pay in cash.

Rwanda Visa Validity and Duration of Stay

The standard tourist visa allows:

• Single-entry visa: 30 days from the date of entry
• Multiple-entry visa: 90 days from the date of first entry
• EAC visitor pass: Up to 6 months
• AU/Commonwealth/La Francophonie visa: 30 days
• Transit visa: 72 hours

If you need to extend your stay beyond the initial visa period, you can apply for a visa renewal through the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration or via the Irembo platform. Note that work is not permitted on a visitor visa – you must apply for a work permit separately.

Passport and Document Requirements

To enter Rwanda, you need:

• A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
• At least one blank page in your passport
• A visa (unless you are from a visa-exempt country)
• Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
• A return or onward travel ticket
• Proof of accommodation in Rwanda

Kenyan and Ugandan citizens may use a national ID card in lieu of a passport to enter Rwanda.

East African Tourist Visa

If you plan to visit multiple East African countries, the East African Tourist Visa is an excellent option. This multiple-entry visa allows you to travel between Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya on a single visa.

• First point of entry: Must be the country that issued the visa

You can apply for the East African Tourist Visa at any of the three countries’ embassies or through their respective e-visa portals.

Important Tips for Rwanda Visa Applications

• No authorized agents: There is no single affiliated agent authorized to apply for a visa on your behalf. Only apply through the official Irembo platform or at a port of entry.
• Apply early: If applying online, submit your application at least 4 days before travel to allow processing time.
• Check your nationality: Verify whether you qualify for visa-free entry before applying and paying for a visa.
